Ambahan is a chanted extemporaneous welcome song by the Iraynun (“people from the interior”) to show their longing for relatives whom they not seen for quite a time. It can also be sung by a group of 3-4 elders as parting words during gatherings like visits to a sick or dying relatives.Today, Antique’s ambahan is revived and sung as a welcome chant to guests and friends. Sugidanun (from root word “sugid” meaning “to narrate”), is known to us as the epic, the most popular of which is the Humadapnon. Epic chanters (manugsugidanun) are found in the interior barangays of Central Panay (e.g. Ta Paz, Capiz, Calinog, Iloilo) which include the towns of Valderrama, Laua-an and Bugasong in Antique. The epic is chanted to entertain men and women who have come to attend a festivity like punsyon (traditional wedding). While waiting for the sun to go down, the chanters lies in the hammock and entertains visitor mostly relatives.
Dapaydapay (literally, “like the dapay” or hawk), is a dance imitating the movement of the dapay bird. The Iraynon are close to nature and their songs and dances often show their closeness with nature. The Iraynun are getting assimilated to the mainstream culture but there are still living individuals who welcome the idea of reviving and promoting their indigenous culture through a government supported School of Living Tradition a Balay Turun-an. The militarization during the 1970’s and the burning of homes in Brgys. Kuliat and Busog by unknown elements resulted to the loss of musical instruments like gongs and drums. |
